An Animal’s Perspective - Center for Zoo Animal Welfare

An Animal’s Perspective
A Unique View on How Zoo Animals Experience Their World
Presented by the Center for Zoo Animal Welfare
Detroit Zoological Society
October 11-14, 2011

Instructors: Dr. Cynthia Bennett, Director of Animal Welfare, Detroit Zoological Society and Gail Laule, Active Environments

Detroit Zoological Society’s Center for Zoo Animal Welfare is offering a unique four-day workshop designed for animal care and facilities staff, supervisors, curators and veterinarians working with captive exotic animals. The workshop will present topics and exercises aimed at improving the well-being of captive animals by better understanding their perspectives and experiences. Participants will attempt to see the zoo through the animals’ eyes, hear the zoo through their ears, smell the zoo though their noses and experience the habitats as they experience them.

The workshop will present topics related to improving the welfare of captive exotic animals. Topics will include understanding the limitations that a human perspective imposes on our view of the world, identification and resolution of animal welfare issues through environmental modification and enrichment, positive reinforcement training techniques, and altered husbandry practices. Workshop format includes lectures, discussions, small group projects, demonstrations and multiple hands-on opportunities with animal environments at the Detroit Zoo.

SEH European Congress of Herpetology and DGHT Deutscher Herpetologentag

SEH European Congress of Herpetology and DGHT Deutscher Herpetologentag

Luxembourg and Trier
25th to 29th of September 2011

The National Museum of Natural History Luxembourg and University of Trier will kindly host this special international meeting uniting two leading conferences in European Herpetology. The SEH European Congress of Herpetology is held every two years in different European countries since 1979. Deutscher Herpetologentag is equivalent to the annual meeting of the German herpetological society, taking place the 47th time in 2011. This will be the first joint meeting of these two important societies and we expect an extraordinary milestone meeting in European Herpetology.

Most of the congress will take place at the Neumünster Abbey cultural centre next to National Museum of Natural History Luxembourg (MNHN). Key note lectures and symposiums will take place during one day at the University of Trier at the Petrisberg, some 40 kilometres from Luxembourg in the Mosel Valley, and will be turned out well with a herp party (transport will be arranged).

10th International Conference on Environmental Enrichment

10th International Conference on Environmental Enrichment

Meeting of the Minds: Working Together to Enrich the Lives of Animals
Oregon Zoo and Oregon National Primate Research Center
14-19 August, 2011
Benson Hotel, Downtown Portland, Oregon, USA

Registration Deadline is June 6th

The International Conference on Environmental Enrichment is a meeting for the exchange of ideas about both theoretical and applied research on enrichment for animals in captivity. The original conference, held in 1993, was hosted by the Oregon Zoo. For the 10th meeting, we are bringing it back to Portland. Further, for the first time, this conference is being co-hosted by a research facility, the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC). This combination of the zoo and laboratory communities will bring together caretakers, researchers, veterinarians of differing backgrounds, but with a similar goal; providing for the well being of the animals in their care. Both the zoo and research communities have much to offer each.
